Way back in 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave his famed ‘Gettysburg Address’.
In it he described ‘a government of the people, by the people, for the people’.
Great words. But words are all they were.
Fast forward 250 years or so and those famous words have now mutated into ‘government of the millionaires, by the millionaires, for the millionaires’.
From the billionaire (he says..but at the very least he’s a millionaire ) president downwards, ‘elected representatives’ are awash in money.
The top ten richest members of Congress alone have a combined wealth of over $1.1 billion (yes, I do mean billion…).
The average salary of a member of Congress is $174,000 a year – that’s before the speaking tours, the writing, the kick-backs, the pay-offs, the executive directorship, the bribes, the cheating, the ‘expenses’….you get my drift…they are all rich, rich, rich, rich!! Taking all just listed into account, a member of Congress’ average yearly earnings come in at about $900,000, that’s 12 times what the average American family earns.
Mind you, they need all that money because getting elected costs a lot – in fact, according to OpenSecrets a campaign to get a Senate place comes in at a cool $10.4 million!
So, considering your ‘elected representatives’ are doing very nicely thank you and considering that their expensive election campaigns are financed by other even wealthier people do you really, really think they have any conception of what life is like for you ‘ordinary folk’, or that they even give a damn whether you live or die?
Of course not. Their concern is keeping themselves rich and paying back their wealthy campaign financiers by ensuring their agenda (no matter how perverse, disgusting or destructive) is actioned.
Yup. It really is all about the ‘benjamins’…
In fact 2014 study by Princeton University and Northwestern University concluded that America is NOT a democracy. -it’s an oligarchy: examining 1800 policies enacted by the US government in previous years, it was noted that those policies disproportionately favored the wealthy and the corporations. In contrast where policies were debated that did not favor that same economic and corporate elite, then those policies were NOT enacted by the US government on 82% of occasions.
We are, truly, ruled by grubby, sordid, thieving, murderous psychopaths.
What if there was a parallel world to this one where the grubby, murderous, psychotic bastards who rule as actually got what they deserved…like the sound of that? Then you’ll like my new book of short stories ‘When Karma Bites..’:
